Real Steel's animatronic robot Atom on display...

In Real Steel, 'Atom' is the discarded robot that's discovered and trained by 'Charlie Kenton' (Hugh Jackman) and his son 'Max' (Dakota Goyo) to become the people's champion by taking on the title holder of the World Robot Boxing crown.

A combination of CGI special effects and animatronics were used to bring the boxing robots to life in the futuristic movie.

These robots on display at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood on October 12, 2011, were created by Animatronic Supervisor, John Rosengrant and the people at Legacy Effects.

Real Steel's Atom robot

Production Designer Tom Meyers was responsible for the design of 'Atom', the main robot in the movie, along with concept artists Victor Martinez who worked on different ideas for his face and Drew Leung who refined the overall look of the humanoid robot.

Atom's bright eyes and featureless face really can be quite expressive in the film, and that scarred face also makes it looks like he has a smile at times.

In the movie Atom literally saves Max's life when he's unearthed in a junkyard whilst the father and son are searching for usable robotic scraps to build a new fighting robot.

After Max cleans him up, they discover Atom is an old G2 (Generation 2) sparring partner robot with shadow boxing capabilities, meaning he can mimic what he sees.

Later Max integrates Noisy Boy's vocal command control into Atom's systems, which allows Charlie Kenton to give him fight instructions via a headset.

Even though he's just a robot, it's also implied there's more to Atom that just wiring and components and maybe there's a spark of life, or artificial intelligence, lurking within that armoured shell.

Noisy Boy animatronic robot from Real Steel on display...

A mix of Computer Generated Animation and animatronics are used to bring the futuristic world of robot boxing to life in Real Steel. Hugh Jackman plays 'Charlie Kenton', a human ex-boxer and small time robot fighting promoter.

In the movie, after his robot 'Ambush' is destroyed when fighting a bull, he needs a new robot and buys 'Noisy Boy', who was once a contender on the World Robot Boxing scene.

Noisy boy costs $45,000 and to raise the money Charlie pretty much sells his son 'Max', who he's not seen in over ten years, relinquishing custody to the boy's rich aunt and her husband.

Unfortunately Noisy Boy gets ripped apart fighting the vicious robot 'Midas' and afterwards Charlie sells his head as a trophy for $400.

Victor Martinez was the movie's lead concept artist and the robot designer responsible for creating many of the humanoid robots unique looks. The live-action animatronic robots, including Noisy Boy pictured here, were created by Animatronic Supervisor, John Rosengrant, and the team at Legacy Effects.

I love the Japanese Samurai look of this robot and think it's easily one of the most exciting robot designs in the movie.

Apparently the designer Victor Martinez wanted this sleek and flashy robot to incorporate elements of Tokyo's night lights combined with the super graphics of Shinjuku, which his armour is adorned with. His LED forearm displays also flash words like 'NOISY', 'BOY' and 'POW' and 'BAM' when he punches something.

Other parts of his body are banded or striped to give the impression that his armour acts like shock absorbers.

Real Steel movie props and costumes on display...

Real Steel is a sci-fi movie set in the near future where robots have replaced human fighters in the ring. Hugh Jackman stars as 'Charlie Kenton', a small-time promoter who thinks he can turn a discarded robot into a contender in the World Robot Boxing championships, with the help of his son 'Max'.

These costumes and props featured in the movie were photographed on display at ArcLight Sherman Oaks cinema on October 3, 2011 and installed by Olson Visual.

Charlie wore this outfit when he went to the court to give up his custody rights of his son Max, whose mother had recently died.

Marlene Stewart was responsible for wardrobe design in the movie. You can also see her work in movies like Tropic Thunder, Coyote Ugly, The Phantom and Terminator 2: Judgement Day.

Max wears these clothes in the movie when the robot Atom fights his first World Robot Boxing tournament and surprisingly wins.

In addition to the costumes worn by on-screen father and son, Hugh Jackman and Dakota Goyo, the exhibit also had these cool original props on display.

Included in the display were props used to control the robot boxers, like the remote for 'Midas' and the headset for 'Noisy Boy'.

Also part of the selection of props were G2 robot schematics, stickers, magazines, World Robot Boxing tickets and props for the robot 'Zeus'.

Hugh Jackman and sci-fi are two of my favourite things, so let's hope they make for a good film.
